The traditional description of stewardship in terms of time, talent, and treasure usually does not examine the spiritual foundations. But unless we are clear about the nature of our being loved by God in the full and personal sacrifice of Jesus Christ in love of the Father and of us as the Gift in the Holy Spirit which is the basis of our response to God in love, then we are in danger of a conflict over things. On this planet, given human sin and selfishness, love and its stewardship always involves sacrifice. And sacrifice is usually difficult, even irksome.
Love makes it bearable, and perfect love makes it a joy. Where Love is perfect, the sacrifice is complete. There is no greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for a friend.
Not only is that Jesus’ description of true love, it is also the standard of Christian stewardship.
Blessings, Fr. John
